Challenged people, such as myself, often have a variety of issues with their nervous system. Such issues can range from simply annoying to debilitating. Regardless, they tend to be constantly present, to the point in which the effected person hardly even notices them, unless they have lingering side effects. There are many ways to cope with these issues, depending on how they present themselves.
Nervous system issues can manifest themselves in a variety of ways. In my experience, the most annoying is through spark-like seizures. These most often occur at night and feel like short pulses of electricity. The shock is enough to wake a sleeping person, and make it difficult to return to sleep. Furthermore, I specifically feel neck pain and extra grogginess on the mornings after each incident. A neurologist may prescribe nerve-blocking medication to prevent these attacks. However, the fear that they cause can worsen other disorders, such as insomnia. Supplements like melatonin help, but may not work well alone. The best method is to try to calm your system as much as possible before bedtime.
Nerve damage can also to felt during the daytime, often on a more lasting basis. For people with cerebral palsy, this damage is more acutely felt in their effected areas, and is linked with poor blood circulation. For example, in my case, the left side of my body can occasionally feel cold, tingly, and/or heavy. These symptoms are always easily hidden. Their only outward signs may be a slight change in facial expression and/or the vigorous rubbing on limbs. The best way to cope with these feelings is to stay calm and go through your day as best as possible.
Individuals with physical challenges are skilled in learning how to deal with the “unique” ways in which their nerves work. They build up a certain tolerance for discomfort that other people may not understand. Whether through medication or other methods, the disorders of the nerve system are not an excuse for people to stop living their best lives. The important thing to remember is that you are stronger than your challenges. May God bless all of my readers!
