Different people cope in different ways. Some people cope with pain, negative emotions, emotional trauma, or a combination of all three. Coping mechanisms are likewise variable.
In my case, my coping mechanisms are sort according to the particular situation. Which is not to say that they don’t aren’t interchangeable. For example, pain medication, sleep, exercise, and spending time online all the ways that I cope with pain. Sleep and exercise are also ways that I deal with stress and depression. Reading, as well as writing, distracts me from my numerous forms of physical pain, as well as battling the boredom and depression of too much isolation. Exercise, especially out in nature, is very helpful in keeping me in good spirits. Even when bad weather/sore muscles keep me from going outdoors, simply looking out at nature can bring me happiness. Now, I know that some coping mechanisms can have negative side-effects, if misused. Too much sleep can cause both headaches and insomnia. The need to keep buying new books to read can get expensive. The key is working to find a proper balance between coping and overindulgence.
Everybody has situations in their lives where they will need to find ways to handle things that are out of their control. These “coping mechanisms” can both hep and hurt people, depending on the way that they are managed. In other words, there can certainly be too much of a good thing.
